Kansas has 11 different physiographic regions that can be generally categorized as woodlands, wetlands, and grasslands. Because of the diversity of habitats, there’s a notable variety of bird species, including some rare species.
The state is located on the Central Flyway, an important north-south migratory route for waterfowl and shorebirds birds. Inland marshes such as Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area play host to remarkable spectacles.

Trail Tip
Wear neutral colored clothing. Many birds can’t see color very well, but bright clothes reflect light and prevent you from blending in with surroundings. Wear dark colors and earth tones.
